IIIT Bhubaneswar was established in 2006 as a result of a public-private partnership between the Government of Odisha, the Government of India, and a consortium of private industries. It is an autonomous institute recognized by the Government of Odisha.

IIIT Bhubaneswar offers undergraduate (B.Tech), postgraduate (M.Tech), and doctoral (Ph.D.) programs in various engineering and technology disciplines. The undergraduate programs include branches such as Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, and Information Technology.

Admissions to the undergraduate programs at IIIT Bhubaneswar are typically based on national-level entrance examinations such as the Joint Entrance Examination-Main (JEE Main) or the JEE (Advanced).
